The 2025 Heartland Whiskey Competition is set to take place in Indianapolis on July 15, bringing together craft whiskey distillers from across the United States to vie for top honors. Sponsored by state corn marketing associations and hosted in collaboration with the American Craft Spirits Association, this event underscores the unique blend of agriculture and artisan spirits. Awards such as Best-of-State for each participating state and several Farmer-Distiller accolades will be presented, highlighting distilleries that also operate farms growing corn, thus emphasizing the agricultural foundation of craft whiskey production.
This year's competition introduces three Farmer-Distiller categories: the Top Farmer-Distiller Trophy, Best Farmer-Distilled Bourbon, and Best Farmer-Distilled Beyond Bourbon Whiskey. The 2023 competition saw over 30% of entries from farmer-distillers, a testament to the segment's rising prominence in the craft spirits arena. A distinguished panel of industry professionals and expert mixologists will assess entries across various whiskey categories, with winners announced in early September. The event is open to all U.S. craft distillers incorporating corn in their spirits, showcasing a wide array from traditional bourbon to innovative whiskey variations.
State corn marketing associations participating in the competition represent more than 75% of U.S. craft distillers, including those from Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and other states, ensuring a diverse and competitive lineup. Beyond celebrating outstanding craft spirits, the competition shines a light on the pivotal role of corn producers in fostering innovative distilleries. Margie A.S. Lehrman, CEO of the ACSA, remarked on the craft distilling sector's continuous drive for innovation, exploring new methods that enhance corn's contribution to premium spirits.
