UGI Utilities, Inc. is initiating comprehensive gas main replacement projects in Bethlehem, starting April 1, focusing on several city streets to upgrade the infrastructure. These projects are designed to bolster safety and ensure the reliability of gas services for residents and businesses alike. The initiative underscores UGI's commitment to modernizing the city's utility infrastructure, addressing aging systems to minimize service disruptions and enhance community safety.
The first phase of the project, targeting Seneca Street between North Hoffert and North Bergan Streets, is expected to wrap up by late April. Construction will occur Monday through Friday, from 7 am to 5 pm, potentially affecting daily commutes and local traffic patterns. The second, more extensive phase, involves East 3rd Street, South New Street, Columbia Street, and Adams Street, with completion anticipated by mid-May. This phase will likely introduce road closures, traffic detours, and parking restrictions during construction hours, urging residents and commuters to plan accordingly.
Temporary natural gas service interruptions may occur as part of the construction process. UGI representatives will coordinate with property owners to ensure access for necessary inspections and equipment relighting, aiming to keep disruptions to a minimum. These efforts not only aim to replace outdated gas mains but also offer an opportunity for properties along the project routes to switch to natural gas, potentially providing more efficient and economical energy solutions.
The timeline for these projects is subject to change, depending on weather conditions and other unforeseen circumstances. UGI encourages those in the affected areas to stay informed about construction activities and any resulting traffic adjustments.
