UGI Utilities, Inc. has announced an 8.7% increase in natural gas rates effective December 1, 2024, impacting over 740,000 customers across 46 Pennsylvania counties. This adjustment will raise the average residential heating customer's monthly bill from $95.40 to $103.69, a change attributed to the rising costs of wholesale natural gas. Paul Szykman, Chief Regulatory Officer at UGI, clarified that the company is mandated by law to pass these costs directly to consumers without any markup, emphasizing efforts to secure the lowest cost supply options for customers.
This rate hike arrives during a period of heightened economic strain for many households, exacerbated by inflation and other escalating expenses. The timing, coinciding with the onset of the winter heating season, may intensify financial pressures, particularly for those on fixed or limited incomes. In response, UGI is offering a suite of assistance programs and payment options designed to alleviate the burden on affected customers. These include budget billing, various payment methods accessible via the company's online account center and app, and an auto-pay program. Furthermore, UGI is facilitating access to federally funded Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) grants for eligible individuals.
To combat the impact of rising energy costs, UGI is also advocating for energy efficiency among its customer base. The company has compiled a list of energy-saving tips and programs available at www.ugi.com/energy-saving-tips, aimed at helping consumers reduce their energy usage and monthly bills. This initiative underscores UGI's commitment to supporting its customers through the challenges posed by fluctuating energy prices.
The natural gas sector remains a pivotal component of Pennsylvania's energy infrastructure, with this rate adjustment mirroring wider market dynamics influencing energy costs across the nation. Given the volatility of global energy markets, consumers are advised to prepare for possible future rate changes and explore sustainable strategies for managing their energy consumption and expenses.
