Comcast has revealed plans for a significant expansion of its fiber broadband network in Northern California, specifically targeting underserved areas in Marin and Sutter counties. This initiative is set to bring next-generation network access to over 150 locations in Marin County and more than 450 locations in Sutter County by mid-2026. The expansion is facilitated by a $14 million Federal Funding Account (FFA) Grant from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and private investments from Comcast, marking a pivotal step in addressing the digital divide in California.
David Tashjian, Regional Senior Vice President of Comcast California, highlighted the importance of reliable, high-speed internet in today's digital economy. The expansion is expected to open up new possibilities for residents and businesses in these counties, providing them with access to Comcast's full suite of products, including internet, video, mobile, voice, and managed home solutions for residential customers, and a comprehensive range of connectivity and communications solutions for businesses.
Local officials have expressed their support for the project, recognizing its potential to transform communities. The initiative is not just about expanding network access but also about fostering digital equity through programs like Project UP, which aims to connect millions to the internet and develop digital skills. Comcast's efforts in California include over $130 million in investments towards digital skills programs, WiFi-connected Lift Zones, and connectivity initiatives.
The expansion will also introduce advanced technologies such as Storm-Ready WiFi, ensuring reliability during power outages, and plans to roll out faster symmetrical gigabit speeds across the country. This move by Comcast is a significant stride towards ensuring that underserved communities in Northern California can fully participate in the digital economy, enhancing educational and economic opportunities while strengthening the region's digital infrastructure.
