Cork Supply has successfully hosted cork harvesting events at California Polytechnic State University and the University of California, Davis, marking a significant step in educating future wine industry professionals about sustainable practices. These events, held on May 28th and May 30th respectively, provided students, faculty, and industry professionals with hands-on experience in cork harvesting, emphasizing the sustainable nature of natural cork as a closure for wine and spirits.
Peter Hladun, CEO of Cork Supply in North America, underscored the company's dedication to educating the next generation about the benefits of natural cork, describing it as the most sustainable choice for winemakers. The events were praised by university officials for offering a unique learning opportunity that typically requires international travel, specifically to Portugal, where cork harvesting is a traditional practice.
Participants gained insights into the cork harvesting process, including the fact that corkwood is harvested every nine years without harming the trees, which can live for about 200 years. The manual harvesting process, conducted from June through August, is noted as one of the highest-paying agricultural jobs globally.
Following the success of these events, Cork Supply introduced a scholarship program to further support students in the wine industry. This program will enable 10 students from seven countries to visit Portugal, observe cork harvesting firsthand, and learn about cork production. Greg Hirson, Global Director of Innovation for Cork Supply, highlighted the program's role in enhancing the company's educational initiatives.
These efforts are part of Cork Supply's Harvesting for the Future strategy, which focuses on sustainability through reducing greenhouse gas emissions, efficient raw material use, and innovating with cork by-products. By integrating education with sustainability, Cork Supply is influencing the future of the wine industry, promoting practices that could lead to innovations in wine production and sustainability.
The impact of these initiatives extends beyond immediate educational benefits, potentially shaping industry standards and consumer preferences towards more sustainable wine production methods. Through these programs, Cork Supply is not only contributing to the professional development of future industry leaders but also advocating for the environmental benefits of natural cork, reinforcing its position as a leader in sustainable wine closures.
