LION E-Mobility AG has announced a strategic partnership between its subsidiary LION Smart Production GmbH and Castrol to develop advanced battery modules featuring direct cooling technology for electric vehicles and energy storage applications. The collaboration combines LION Smart's direct battery-cooling innovation with Castrol's thermal fluids and battery thermal management expertise, targeting significant improvements in battery performance across passenger cars, trucks, and battery energy storage systems worldwide.
The new battery module utilizes direct battery cooling, an approach where battery cells are submerged in Castrol ON EV Thermal Fluids, a lightweight dielectric fluid designed to enable superior heat dissipation. This method facilitates faster charging and discharging while enhancing power density, battery lifespan, and safety. According to internal testing, the technology demonstrates advantages over conventional indirect battery cooling systems by providing more efficient thermal management.
Engineered with a modular design, the battery module ensures homogeneous temperature distribution and minimal temperature gradient within cells. Its structure maximizes the active cooled contact surface, and a 'single cell fuse' feature helps reduce potential propagation from internal short circuits. These innovations allow the battery module to improve plug-in hybrid efficiency through higher energy recuperation, greater power at lower system cost, and increased operational safety.
The partnership represents part of Castrol's strategic focus on direct battery cooling technologies and battery fluid innovation. The collaboration was recently highlighted at Battery Show Europe, where experts from both companies demonstrated the technology's potential to enhance PHEV applications through efficient cooling and superior thermal balance. Matthias Donner, VP Advanced Mobility and Industrial Products at Castrol, described direct battery cooling as transformative for EV performance and safety, noting that partnering with LION Smart enables demonstrating the full potential of Castrol ON EV Thermal Fluids in advanced battery systems.
