Arius Technology has announced a cultural heritage project with the Municipality of Sansepolcro, Italy, to digitize Piero della Francesca's fresco The Resurrection using ultra-high-resolution 3D scanning technology. The project, conducted in partnership with the Comune di Sansepolcro, owner of the Museo Civico 'Piero della Francesca,' aims to create highly detailed digital records for conservation, study, and restoration purposes. Recognized as one of the greatest works of Western art, The Resurrection will be scanned with extreme precision down to 10 microns using Arius's proprietary technology. This conservation-grade scanning safely records the fresco's surface texture and color, creating data-rich files known as ADMF™.
Paul Lindahl, CEO of Arius Technology, stated that this technology captures the full dimensionality of the original work to ensure its legacy lives on in the digital world. The scanning technology captures both 3D surface geometry and color, creating files that can serve multiple purposes from conservation analysis to museum-grade reproductions. This represents a pivotal step in preserving frescoes, which are particularly vulnerable to environmental and structural degradation. The digital files can even be stored on the blockchain as part of long-term preservation efforts.
Sansepolcro, the hometown of Piero della Francesca, is the first municipality in Italy to adopt this technology. Art historian Luca Baroni noted that this globally pioneering project highlights the strength of local Italian institutions as custodians of extraordinary treasures. Mayor Fabrizio Innocenti expressed pride in using cutting-edge technology to enhance the town's artistic heritage, honoring Piero della Francesca whom he described as 'the most modern among the ancients.'
This digitization project is part of Arius Technology's broader initiative to collaborate with cultural institutions worldwide, providing tools that bridge art history, technology, and public engagement. The company's technology, originally designed to forensically scan the Mona Lisa, now serves leading museums and global art collectors in digitally safeguarding works of art.
