Infrastructure Capital Advisors (ICA) announced the launch of the Infrastructure Capital Nasdaq Option Income ETF (QVOL), a new fund listed on the Nasdaq that seeks to deliver high monthly income with capital appreciation through exposure to companies in the Nasdaq Composite Index. The ETF, developed in partnership with Nasdaq, aims to address the tradeoff between yield and capital appreciation by actively managing option writing on technology-heavy equities.
QVOL differentiates itself from competitor buy-write and option overlay strategies by simultaneously managing the equity portfolio and option activity. Unlike systematic, long-duration option writing on an index, QVOL dynamically captures option premiums on equities it deems overvalued, using short-duration options to limit upside caps. This approach allows the fund to participate in greater market upside than many peers while generating high income through annual option premiums.
The fund has the flexibility to select investments across the Nasdaq Composite Index, which includes the largest non-financial companies in the Nasdaq-100, such as the "Magnificent Seven" (Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Tesla). ICA believes this broader exposure and flexibility in equity selection will support QVOL's performance.
QVOL employs ICA's active management process, selecting investments based on quantitative, qualitative, and relative valuation factors. The team emphasizes companies with favorable relative value, such as those with lower relative prices or higher profitability compared to their index peers. Metrics like price-to-earnings and price-to-cash flow ratios are considered. The investment philosophy is driven by discipline, consistency, and risk management, with transactions executed after evaluating time horizons and portfolio positioning.
Jay Hatfield, lead portfolio manager for all Infrastructure Capital funds, brings over 30 years of experience to the strategy. The firm manages over $3.5 billion in total assets and offers a lineup of ETFs including the Infrastructure Capital Bond Income ETF (BNDS) and the InfraCap MLP ETF (AMZA).
The launch of QVOL comes as investors seek income-focused strategies in a volatile tech sector. By combining equity exposure with actively managed options, QVOL aims to provide a differentiated approach to generating income while participating in capital appreciation. The fund is distributed by Quasar Distributors, LLC.
