Robert Hoffecker Highlights Growing Opportunities for Tourism Beyond San Juan

Puerto Rico's tourism industry is reaching new heights, and hospitality professional Robert Hoffecker sees an opportunity to spread the benefits beyond the capital. With record visitation and growing interest in regional experiences, Hoffecker argues that encouraging travelers to explore the island's western, central, and southern regions can support local economies and extend visitor stays.

San Juan remains a vital gateway. Its hotels, restaurants, and cultural attractions draw millions, but Hoffecker believes the capital's strength can introduce visitors to a much larger Puerto Rico. "San Juan gives visitors an incredible introduction to Puerto Rico, but it does not tell the entire story," Hoffecker said. "Someone can have a great first few days here and still have the western coast, the mountains, southern communities, and completely different food and outdoor experiences left to discover."

The numbers support that view. Puerto Rico welcomed an estimated 8.1 million visitors in 2025, an 8% increase from the previous year, according to Discover Puerto Rico. The island recorded nearly 7.9 million lodging room nights and approximately $1.99 billion in lodging revenue. While about 60% of travelers visited the Metro region, roughly 35% to 40% explored the East or West, and 31% visited the South. Notably, those who ventured west stayed an average of 6.6 nights, and southern visitors averaged 5.7 nights, compared to the overall average of five nights.

"Regional travel gives people another reason not to rush through the island," Hoffecker said. "If someone realizes there are several completely different experiences within Puerto Rico, adding another day or planning another trip starts to make sense."

Western Puerto Rico, including Rincón, Aguadilla, and Mayagüez, offers beaches, surfing, and a relaxed pace. Aguadilla's Rafael Hernández International Airport provides an alternative entry point. The central mountains feature coffee-growing areas, hiking, and scenic drives, while the South, anchored by Ponce, boasts museums, architecture, and coastal attractions. Recent booking data shows short-term rental nights in the South pacing 26% higher for the next six months, with the West and Central regions each up about 17%.

Food is another powerful draw. Puerto Rico's 2024 Visitor Profile found that 84% of travelers participated in gastronomic experiences, and 40% said food influenced their choice of destination. Regional restaurants, bakeries, and coffee farms can turn a drive into part of the vacation.

Hospitality businesses can facilitate this exploration by building relationships with local guides and transportation providers, and by asking guests about their interests. "The recommendation has to be practical," Hoffecker said. "It does not help to tell someone about a great place if you make it sound like a twenty-minute trip when it really requires most of the day."

For the industry, this approach can distribute visitor spending more evenly and strengthen Puerto Rico's appeal as a repeat destination. As Hoffecker noted, "Puerto Rico does not need every visitor to experience everything in one trip. It may actually be better when someone leaves realizing how much they still want to see."
