The Italian Barrel, an intimate Northern Italian restaurant located at 1240 Decatur Street in New Orleans' French Quarter, has been honored with the 2026 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. This award recognizes restaurants with wine lists that offer at least 75 selections and feature a well-chosen assortment of quality producers that match the menu in both price and style.
Wine Spectator's Restaurant Awards, launched in 1981, celebrate excellence in restaurant wine service across three levels: the Award of Excellence, the Best of Award of Excellence, and the Grand Award. This year, 2,083 restaurants earned the Award of Excellence, 1,830 received the Best of Award of Excellence, and 99 were awarded the Grand Award. The Italian Barrel is among the 4,012 winners overall.
"Wine is part of the natural rhythm of a meal at The Italian Barrel—not an afterthought, but something to explore slowly, share generously and enjoy course by course," said Lori and Kevin Cates, co-owners of The Italian Barrel. "This recognition belongs to our entire team, whose knowledge, care and hospitality make every bottle and every table feel personal."
The award underscores a broader trend in the restaurant industry, where diners are becoming more selective about their drinking choices. As noted by Marvin R. Shanken, Chairman and CEO of Wine Spectator, "The restaurant industry is rapidly transforming as diners become more selective about when, how and what they drink. As wine drinkers grow more mindful, restaurants are adapting with creative wine programs."
The Italian Barrel's wine program is deeply rooted in Italian traditions, reflecting the heritage of its founders. Originally founded by Verona-born Chef Samantha Castagnetti, the restaurant is now stewarded by Lori and Kevin Cates, who have continued to emphasize seasonal pastas, composed secondi, and carefully sourced ingredients. The restaurant's wine list is designed to complement the menu, offering guests an opportunity to explore wines from various Italian regions.
