Southwest Airlines Announces Major Overhaul to Fare and Boarding System for 2025

Southwest Airlines has unveiled plans for a comprehensive transformation of its travel model, effective May 28, 2025. This overhaul includes the introduction of three new fare categories—Choice Extra, Choice Preferred, and Choice—replacing the existing Business Select, Anytime, and Wanna Get Away Plus tiers. The traditional Wanna Get Away fare will transition to a Basic Fare, offering reduced benefits and no complimentary seat selection, positioning passengers in the final boarding group.

In a move that aligns Southwest more closely with industry standards, the airline will introduce baggage fees, a departure from its long-standing policy of free checked luggage. Fees are expected to range from $35–$40 for the first checked bag and $45–$50 for the second, with exemptions for Rapid Rewards® Cardmembers and A-List Members, who can still enjoy two free bags for up to eight guests on the same reservation.

Bob Jordan, Southwest's President and CEO, described these changes as part of the airline's evolution, emphasizing a continued commitment to customer experience. The introduction of assigned seating in the third quarter of 2025 will further alter the boarding process, a hallmark of Southwest's customer-friendly approach.

These modifications reflect broader industry trends towards unbundling services and creating more detailed pricing structures. By offering tiered fare options and introducing seat selection fees, Southwest aims to boost revenue while catering to the personalized needs of travelers. Loyalty program members will benefit from expanded perks, including enhanced seat selection options, priority boarding, and potential improvements to the Companion Pass® for cardholders and tier members.

Travelers are advised to review the new fare types carefully, as Basic fares will come with more restrictions. This strategic shift signifies Southwest's adaptation to changing market dynamics while striving to retain its unique customer benefits. For more information, visit https://www.southwest.com.
