Ocean Thermal Energy Corporation (OTE Corp) has partnered with Johnson Controls to pioneer a renewable energy solution for the U.S. Army Garrison - Kwajalein Atoll, marking a significant step towards energy independence and sustainable technology. The $3.5 million contract focuses on demonstrating the viability of a 17.5MW Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) system, designed to replace imported fossil fuels with a cleaner, more sustainable energy source. This innovative project utilizes the natural temperature differences in ocean water to generate continuous power and produce desalinated water, addressing critical needs for the remote military installation.
DCO Energy has been appointed as the owner's engineer, tasked with creating a detailed OTEC system design that encompasses project load analysis, conceptual engineering, and cost estimation. This partnership draws on prior successes, including a seawater cooling system for a Bahamian resort and a conceptual design for a 7.5 MW OTEC system for Bahamas Power and Light. The initiative aims to confirm the OTEC system's practicality for remote military bases, prove its reliability and scalability, and customize the technology in collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to meet specific operational demands.
In addition to energy generation, the project will investigate the potential for seawater desalination, tackling both energy and water resilience challenges faced by the military installation. This effort supports the Army's goals of enhancing energy security, sustainability, and operational resilience. Jeremy P. Feakins, OTE Corp's Chairman and CEO, highlighted the project's importance, noting its role in showcasing OTEC technology's transformative potential and its contribution to integrating renewable energy into national defense strategies.
The implications of this project extend beyond the Kwajalein Atoll, offering a blueprint for sustainable energy solutions at military installations in remote locations worldwide. By reducing reliance on traditional fuel sources and improving operational readiness in demanding environments, this initiative represents a forward-thinking approach to addressing the dual challenges of energy and water security.
