Bacula Systems has launched version 18.2 of its backup and recovery software, marking a significant advancement in support for high-performance computing (HPC) environments and a diverse range of virtual machine types. This update solidifies Bacula's reputation for delivering high-security, high-performance backup solutions tailored for complex IT infrastructures.
The release is timely, as the industry moves towards more cost-effective alternatives to traditional virtual machines. According to Bacula's CEO, Frank Barker, the new version highlights the software's capability to manage backups across various virtual machine types, enhancing security, compliance, and cost efficiency for organizations.
Key improvements in version 18.2 include extended support for virtual machine platforms such as Nutanix, VMware, Hyper-V, and others, alongside advanced security measures like data poisoning detection and FIPS 140-3 compliance. Notably, the Single Item Restore feature is now available for all Hypervisor plugins, and the introduction of Hypervisor to Cloud (EC2) conversion facilitates seamless migration of on-premise virtual machines to the cloud.
Enhancements to the Hyper-V support enable agentless backups, offering flexibility in deployment types and backup methods without additional storage requirements. The Kubernetes module has been updated for smarter backup mode selection and broader service protection, including support for Amazon RDS backups and improved Microsoft 365 plugin functionalities.
For HPC environments, Bacula has added Quobyte support and optimized its Big File Split module for faster backups in data-intensive settings. The software's deduplication capabilities have also been enhanced, providing more robust scan and recovery options.
Jorge Gea, CTO of Bacula Systems, emphasized the software's unparalleled features, including unlimited licensing, extensive operating system support, and compatibility with a wide range of hypervisors and containers. This release underscores Bacula's dedication to offering scalable, secure backup solutions that cater to the dynamic needs of government agencies, educational institutions, and large enterprises.
As data volumes and IT infrastructure complexities grow, Bacula's version 18.2 emerges as a comprehensive solution that not only meets current challenges but also adapts to future technological shifts, ensuring organizations can manage their data securely and efficiently.
