Comcast has announced a major expansion of its Xfinity network in Tulare County, California, aiming to provide high-speed internet access to approximately 6,200 previously unserved locations by early 2026. This initiative, supported by a $26 million Federal Funding Account Grant from the California Public Utilities Commission and Comcast's private investment, marks a significant step towards closing the digital divide in the region. The project will utilize DOCSIS 4.0 technology to offer symmetrical, multi-gigabit internet options, ensuring optimal upload and download speeds for residents and businesses.
The expansion targets areas including Alpaugh, Dinuba, Earlimart, Kingsburg, Pixley, Sultana, Traver, Tulare, Visalia, and Tipton, addressing the critical need for reliable internet access in these communities. David Tashjian, Regional Senior Vice President of Comcast, highlighted the company's commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind, regardless of economic status or location. Larry Micari, Chair of the Tulare County Board of Supervisors, emphasized the necessity of high-speed internet for education, work, and economic development, underscoring the project's potential to transform the region.
Beyond infrastructure, Comcast's Project UP initiative represents a $1 billion commitment to connect tens of millions of people to the internet nationwide. In California, the company has invested over $130.5 million in digital skills programs, WiFi-connected Lift Zones, and connectivity initiatives. Additionally, Comcast's Internet Essentials program offers affordable high-speed internet to eligible households, having already connected more than 2.2 million Californians since 2011.
Residents in the newly served areas will gain access to Comcast's comprehensive Xfinity services, including internet, video, mobile, and home solutions. Businesses will benefit from Comcast Business's wide range of connectivity and cybersecurity solutions. This expansion not only promises to enhance the online experience for thousands but also supports the broader goal of fostering educational opportunities, economic growth, and improved quality of life in Tulare County.
