Comcast is embarking on a significant expansion of its broadband network in rural Fresno County, specifically targeting over 160 locations in Riverdale that have previously lacked access to high-speed internet. This ambitious project, expected to be completed by 2026, is made possible through a combination of a $1 million Federal Funding Account grant from the California Public Utilities Commission and Comcast's own private investment. This initiative is part of Comcast's larger $4 billion technology investment across California, showcasing the company's commitment to enhancing digital infrastructure statewide.
Beyond the physical expansion of broadband services, Comcast has taken steps to support the local community by donating laptop computers to all eighth-grade students in Caruthers and contributing $10,000 to the Caruthers Unified Education Fund. These efforts are aimed at improving digital literacy and providing essential resources to students and families, further emphasizing the importance of accessibility to technology in education.
Orin Hirschkorn, Superintendent of the Caruthers Unified School District, commended Comcast for its comprehensive approach, noting the dual focus on infrastructure and educational support. Fresno County Supervisor Buddy Mendes highlighted the potential economic benefits of the expansion, suggesting it could spur economic growth, support local businesses, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.
The new network is set to offer multi-gigabit internet speeds with 99.9 percent reliability, granting residents access to Xfinity's full range of services, including internet, video, mobile, and home security solutions. Through its Internet Essentials program, Comcast has already connected more than 2.2 million Californians to affordable high-speed internet, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to reducing the digital divide.
Comcast's investment in California extends beyond infrastructure, with over $130.5 million in cash and in-kind donations to nonprofits focused on digital skills development and connectivity programs over the past three years. This holistic approach underscores the company's dedication to not only expanding access to high-speed internet but also ensuring that communities have the tools and resources needed to thrive in a digital world.
