CPV Renewable Power, an affiliate of Competitive Power Ventures (CPV), has initiated construction on the CPV Rogue's Wind project, a 114 MW wind energy venture located in Cambria and Clearfield Counties, Pennsylvania. This project underscores CPV's dedication to transforming former coal mine lands into sources of renewable energy, aligning with broader efforts to transition towards a low-carbon future. The CPV Rogue's Wind project is CPV's third initiative in Cambria County, joining the CPV Maple Hill Solar and the CPV Fairview Energy Center, showcasing the company's diversified approach to energy generation.
Gary Lambert, CEO of CPV, highlighted the strategic importance of Pennsylvania for CPV's operations, citing the successful launch of CPV Fairview in 2019 and CPV Maple Hill in 2023. The addition of CPV Rogue's Wind will complete CPV's trio of energy generation types within the region. This project is not only a testament to CPV's commitment to renewable energy but also to its focus on brownfield development and positive community impact. Sean Finnerty, President of CPV Renewables, emphasized the dual benefits of revitalizing former industrial sites and providing essential resources to communities in need.
The CPV Rogue's Wind project is the first to emerge from CPV's partnership with Harrison Street, a collaboration aimed at accelerating the development of CPV's 4 GW renewable energy pipeline. Featuring 19 Vestas V-162 wind turbines, the project is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 32,000 homes annually, significantly reducing CO2 emissions. Beyond environmental benefits, the project promises economic advantages, including job creation during construction and new revenue streams for local municipalities. Additionally, it offers educational opportunities, with the nearby Rock Run Recreation Area serving as a gateway for public engagement with renewable energy technologies.
Tom Kakabar, Chair of the Cambria County Conservation and Recreation Authority, praised the project for realizing a long-held vision for the area. Scheduled for commercial operation in 2026, CPV Rogue's Wind is part of CPV's ambitious 10 GW pipeline of renewable and dispatchable generation projects, including initiatives with carbon capture technology. This project exemplifies how the energy sector's evolution can simultaneously address environmental challenges and revitalize communities historically reliant on fossil fuels, marking a pivotal moment in the journey towards sustainable energy solutions.
